Primary School Staff
Grade 1 Blue Teacher
Ms Morrissey comes from sunny Sydney, Australia and brings her warm and friendly personality to the WISS Community. She holds formal qualifications in Primary Education from Australia Catholic University and Sydney University. With over 25 years teaching experience in both Early Years and Primary, Ms. Morrissey is as passionate and enthusiastic about teaching as when she first started. Ms Morrissey has taught in a variety of Sydney schools as well as schools in Canada and the UK. During her career she has held various executive roles including Coordinator and Deputy Principal.
Grade 1 Blue Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Originally from China, Roafare graduated from Nanchang University and is an experienced educator with over ten years experience working in the education field. She loves teaching and is always trying so hard to improve her teaching skills. Roafare strives to instill a life-long love for learning in her students with in internationally-minded awareness and respect for themselves, for the environment, and for others.
Grade 1 Green Teacher
Cindy Lam is from Canada with a dual degree in commerce and education. Miss Lam has been teaching since 2007 and has worked as far afield as South Korea before coming to China. One of her proudest moments was when her students in Korea won a prestigious prize for English and she saw how happy it made the children. She strives to motivate students to become life-long learners with professional skills, integrity, and global-mindedness. Miss Lam fully embraces the PYP inquiry-based method of education.
Grade 1 Green Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Ms. Wang completed her undergraduate study at Shanghai International Studies University with a major in Educational Technology and then earned her M.S. Ed. from University of Pennsylvania in the U.S. Before coming to WISS, she has taught young learners English in Shanghai and Mandarin in American public schools. She loves to see students’ progress and believes every student can achieve success. Her interests include learning different languages and cultures, playing piano and tennis.
Grade 1 Red Teacher
Monika is from West London in the United Kingdom where she was awarded her Bachelor of Education from Kingston University, London. She is an Early Years specialist who is passionate about sharing her knowledge and experience. She is keen to provide children with the confidence to enable them to be happy independent learners. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, travelling and cooking; always with the help of her son, so it can get very messy! Together, they are very excited to be a part of the WISS community.
Grade 1 Red Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Ms. Chen is originally from Shanghai and graduated from East China Normal University where she was awarded her Bachelor Degree specializing in Early Childhood Education. Before she worked at WISS, she taught in a Shanghai public school. Ms. Chen loves working with younger students and especially loves using educational games for teaching which the students enjoy. During her spare time, Ms. Chen likes to read books about children’s psychology, which helps here understand more about working with children and how to teach them effectively.
Grade 1 Yellow Teacher
Edward is a passionate educator who comes to WISS from Toronto, Canada. He holds a history degree from Trent University in Canada and a teaching degree from the University of Wollongong in Australia. Edward’s thirst for knowledge has him currently completing a MBA in International Education from Keele University in the UK. Since embarking on his international teaching career in 2008, he has travelled and taught in many places around the world, including Thailand, South Korea, Australia, Taiwan and most recently Ningbo, China. He is excited to be continuing his PYP career with us, and hopes to inspire our learners here in the WISS community.
Grade 1 Yellow Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Ms. Liandan, originally coming from Hubei Province, obtained her M.S. Ed. from The University of Edinburgh. Deeply influenced by her family, she loves to teach and work with children. Throughout university, she had different teaching experiences with children ranging from 6 to 18 years old. For her, a good teacher should be open-minded, patient, professional, and should inspire every student’s talents and help them grow up happy and fulfilled. During leisure time, she loves reading, travelling, singing, playing musical instruments, practicing calligraphy and volunteering in NGOs. Liandan is very excited and honored to be at WISS!
Grade 2 Blue Teacher
Ms. Bela is an experienced educator who has been teaching in various international schools since 2001 and she considers herself a World Citizen. Ms. Bela was born in Germany, grew up in Russia and has been living in China with her daughter for over 14 years and think of Shanghai as her home away from home. Ms. Bela holds a degree in Drama, BA in Journalism, PGCE in Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Leicester University in U.K. Outside of school Ms. Bela enjoys traveling and experiencing different cultures. Her other interests are photography, dancing, reading and spending quality time with family and friends.
Grade 2 Red Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Ms. Tian graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a major in English and received her teaching qualification for early years and primary school. Before coming to WISS, she worked as an English teacher in a bilingual school for 3 years. She enjoyed the time with children and was very proud of them when they made progress. She is very excited to become a member of our WISS family and she hopes to learn and share with her students and the wider WISS community. In her spare time she likes reading, drawing and handicrafts.
Grade 2 Green Teacher
Katie Richard was born and raised in Georgia, USA. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and certificate in Special Education from Kennesaw State University. She began her teaching career in a culturally diverse urban school in Atlanta and has a passion for creating engaging lessons to reach all of her learners’ needs and interests. When she isn’t hard at work teaching, Katie enjoys exploring the outdoors, running, soccer, and practicing yoga.
Grade 2 Green Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Originally from Shanghai, Ms. Wang received a MA in Curriculum and Instruction from University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA. She had an internship experience in one of the international schools in Shanghai and did her student teaching at a California state public school. During the days of her college life, she also had been an individual English teacher, assistant, and volunteer. She is passionate about the field of education and wishes to be a dedicated educator to inspire students.
Grade 2 Red Teacher
Linnea McCully is originally from the Washington, DC area. She attended college in Minnesota, where she studied Elementary Education. She taught first grade in Cartagena, Colombia for two years before moving to China. Before joining WISS, Linnea taught the PYP curriculum at Rainbow Bridge here in Shanghai. Linnea enjoys teaching through inquiry, and she is excited to be teaching second grade at WISS.
Grade 2 Blue Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Ms. Tang graduated from Huangshi Technical College, Hubei Province with a major in English education. Since graduating, she has been working ineducation at Ju’an Central Kindergarten, in Guangdong province and at Kinderworld Kindergarten in Shanghai. Her passion is educating children and teaching and learning methodology. She is a dedicated and valuable staff member who holds great affection for her students.
Grade 2 Yellow Teacher
Ms. Beatriz Bergasa began teaching in China in 2011, after seven teaching years in London. Originally from Barcelona, Beatriz first went to London to complete her BA with Honours in Journalism and News Media, and then stayed to get her MA and a PGCE in primary education. Beatriz loves China and enjoys supporting and guiding children as they continue on their learning journey.
Grade 2 Yellow Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Ms. Shen graduated from Shanghai Normal University with a BA in Chinese Language and Literature. She has worked as a Chinese teacher for over thirteen years and gained a lot of teaching experience. She enjoys reading and travelling.
Grade 3 Yellow Teacher
Ms. Shen graduated from East China Normal University with a BA in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. She has worked as a Chinese teacher for over eleven years and gained a lot of experience in elementary education. Ms. Shen likes Chinese traditional culture very much. She enjoys sharing all of her knowledge with children.

Christine graduated from Shanghai Normal University, major in teaching Chinese as second language. After 10 years teaching at the other Shanghai International schools, Christine joined WISS. Interests and hobbies include ICT, Maths and travelling
Grade 3 Red Teacher / Primary Technology Integration Specialist
Kathy Anderson is from the United States and before coming to WISS was teaching in an international school in Costa Rica, where she was a Grade 2 class teacher, having taught Grade 4 before that. Kathy has enjoyed teaching in the PYP and helping to further integrate technology into the classroom at WISS.
Grade 3 Red Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Ms. Shen graduated from East China Normal university with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She obtained a Teacher’s Certificate from kindergarten to middle school. She has worked in international schools for 11years with aged 3-12. Ms. Shen joined WISS since 2007, and has worked in Early Years and Primary School. She is a dedicated practitioner who enjoys her time in helping students to explore and experience life. She loves reading, travelling, music and sports.
Grade 3 Green Teacher
Miss Deirdre Bennett is originally from a small New England town in the United States. She graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. In 2007, she began her teaching career in Boston teaching students identified as having special needs in grades K-3. She then moved to South Korea, where she taught grade two and most recently grade four in South India. She enjoys guiding inquiry based learning while creating a safe and nurturing environment for each of her grade two students.

Polly is originally from Shanghai, China. She has been teaching in International schools since she graduated in 2004. After several years’ teaching, she gained her Bachelor Degree at Shanghai Normal University. Polly joined at WISS in 2013 after working at Dulwich College Shanghai. She feels a great honor to teach children from different countries and enjoys getting along with them at school. Polly loves communicating with children and watching them growing healthily. She brings patience and love to school every morning. She believes that children should learn happily at any time. Whilst Polly was studying, she learned to play the piano and has a keen interest in music.
Grade 3 Yellow Teacher
Nadya is originally from Mozambique but has lived in many different countries. She received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York and a Master’s in Education from Jones International University, in Colorado. Nadya is currently finalizing her second Master’s degree in Education – Elementary Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and pursuing an online graduate Certificate in Advanced IB Studies at George Mason University. Before WISS she worked in an IB world school in Tanzania as a primary class teacher for two years. Her two daughters are with her at WISS.
Grade 3 Blue Teacher
She originally come from the Lake District area in England and is the eldest of four children. She mainly grew up in Hannover, Germany. There she attended an international school, which sparked her interest in the variety of different cultures and countries that exist. She completed her BA in Primary School Teaching at the University of Cumbria in the UK. After which she headed back to Germany, where she taught at an international school. The next school she ended up in was a little further away and located on the hot, sunny island of Barbados! She spent three years on the wonderful island before moving to Shanghai. She is happy to be at WISS!
Grade 4 Blue Teacher
Amy Kent is from the Hudson Valley of New York and received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education and Special Education grades 1-6 from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York. An educator since 2005 with and a strong PYP background, Amy enjoys being involved in the discoveries that children gain through their education. Amy believes as an international school it is our responsibility to create global citizens for the future. Part of that is having parents, teachers, and students work together; to foster a positive learning experience for everyone and give students the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Grade 4 Blue Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Joy Zhou earned her B.A from East China Normal University where she majored in Chinese Linguistic and Grammatology. She has been teaching since 2010. Joy loves teaching and appreciates different cultures. She loves sports and she can play badminton very well. During her spare time, she likes traveling, reading, cooking, visiting plant markets and playing badminton.
Grade 4 Green Teacher
Miss Danielle Hundley was born and raised in a small southern Illinois town in the United States. She graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and middle school endorsements in social sciences and language arts. In 2012, she began her teaching career in Newton, IL as a fifth grade teacher. Miss Hundley is very excited about the opportunity to work with the WISS students, staff, and community. She enjoys traveling, live music, biking, spending time with her family, and encouraging students to be lifelong learners.
Grade 4 Green Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Ms. Sun graduated from Xi’an Translators University in 2002, and she has been teaching for 6 years in local colleges, primary schools and international kindergartens. She loves teaching and is always trying to improve her teaching skills. She won the 2nd prize in the Teachers’ Skills Competition of Shanghai in 2004. She believes that learning is fun and she is happy to learn and explore with her students. We welcome her to the WISS team!
Grade 4 Red Teacher
Ivette Mejia was born in Massachusetts, USA but has lived in different countries and various states including Florida where she attended the University of Florida. There she received a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education with a focus in Special Education. Ivette lived and worked in the Dominican Republic for two years and is enjoying the opportunity to live in Shanghai and work at WISS. Ivette is passionate about teaching and does not take for granted the opportunity to guide and teach her students.
Grade 4 Red Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Zoe Zhou graduated from East China Normal University where she majored in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Before joining WISS, she worked in two other international schools in Shanghai. She regards teaching as her lifelong career. She hopes the time she is with the students will be a memorable journey in her students’ lives.
Grade 4 Yellow Teacher
Andrew Bailey is from Florida in the U.S. and graduated with a BA in English from Palm Beach Atlantic University. Embarking on an overseas teaching career in 1997, he has lived and taught in Korea, Indonesia, Turkey, and several cities in China, his last post being in Suzhou where he taught Grade 5 for six years. He has a Masters in English Language Teaching from the University of Surrey in the UK and completed his teacher’s education at George Mason University in the state of Virginia, where he is certified as an Elementary K-6 teacher.

Ms Ye graduated from Fudan University with a BA in English. She has worked as a Chinese teacher for over six years and gained a lot of experience in elementary education. Ms Ye has a passion of working with children. Her interests include arts and crafts.
Grade 5 Blue Teacher
Mr. Bradley grew up in a small village in Northern Ireland. He graduated with a BA with Honors in History and Business from Liverpool University before completing his PGCE at Roehampton University, London. Mr. Bradley taught in a number of schools in the London area before moving to China to teach in 2011. He has a great passion for traveling and hopes to visit many new places while working in Shanghai, as well as pursuing his love of sports. He thoroughly enjoys teaching and embraces each year as another chance to inspire the children in his care.

After graduating from Shanghai Normal University, Carol Chen had her teaching experience in a local public school for 7 years and in an international school for 8 years. She has gained many teaching awards from the Chinese government and has become an experienced teacher, especially teaching Chinese. She likes reading and writing. Carol also enjoys teaching children Chinese writing.
Grade 5 Green Teacher
Jordan Joanisse is an international educator and learning enthusiast from Ottawa, Canada. He holds a bachelor of philosophy from the University of Western Ontario in Canada, and a Masters of Teaching degree from Griffith University in Australia. Over the last four years, Jordan has been a classroom teacher and digital learning coordinator at an international school in Semarang, Indonesia. His classroom practice integrates pedagogy and technology to engage students in rich tasks that support deep learning and build strong literacy and numeracy skills. Jordan loves his job, and in his spare time applies the same level of energy and enthusiasm to a long list of hobbies and interests that include language learning, coding, surfing and mountain climbing.

Ruya He is an experienced educator with ten years experience working in international education. She holds both a Master’s of Education, K-12, from Plymouth State University and a Bachelor of Language Arts degree from Shanghai International Studies University. A life-long learner, Ruya brings her passion and commitment for working with children and the skills to meet the unique challenges and opportunities that a diverse student body brings. Ms. He is excited to be part of the WISS family and enthusiastic to learn and to share with this like group of talented and devoted educators. She also has a passion for travel and looks forward to sharing her diverse personal and professional experiences with students and staff alike.
Grade 5 Red Teacher
Miss Natalie Skaines grew up on the northern Queensland coast of Australia. She graduated from James Cook University in Cairns in 2002 with a Bachelor of Education. Throughout her ten years of teaching, Natalie has experienced working in various year levels and has been involved in program writing to coincide with the Australian Curriculum and inquiry based learning. She is a very active and dedicated educator who has a passion for engaging, guiding and developing her students to their full potential. Natalie enjoys various physical activities including running and bike riding and holds an accredited ‘Swim Australia Teacher’ certificate.

Ms. Zhu has been working in International schools for since 2007. Her major is teaching Chinese as a second language and she loves working with young children; seeing them learn and grow. In her spare time she enjoys reading books, listening to the music, and travelling.
Grade 5 Yellow Teacher
Ms. Anuradha Choudhuri, who is generally known as Anoo, is a global citizen – born in India, she has traveled and lived in many places and has now settled a home in Mexico. She speaks four languages fluently and understands four more. Anoo has been teaching since 1983 and has been teaching the PYP since 1997. She is passionate about PYP and believes that it is the best way to educate our future generations. She loves travelling, cooking and making new friends. She has two beautiful children – young adults now – who are her pride and joy.
Grade 5 Yellow Teacher / Chinese Teacher
Ms. Hu graduated from Shanghai East China University of Science and Technology where her major was Social Education. Upon graduation, she taught Chinese for more than three years to foreign students aged 7-16. She also taught at Shujin Cultural School Center and organized the school summer camp and winter camp and Chinese Culture lesson for two other International Schools in Shanghai. Her hobbies include calligraphy and singing. She loves Chinese traditional arts and hopes she can instill her passion in her students.
Head of Learning Support / School Counselor
Merav Wirthiem has a Masters of Education in Counseling, a BEd in Educational Psychology and Teaching Certificates in Drama and Special Education. Prior to coming to Shanghai with her family, Merav worked as a high school counselor in Israel and head teacher for the special needs department that supports children with communication disorders. Merav has been living and working in Shanghai as a Program Director at the Essential Learning Group since 2011. She supervised a team of over thirty specialists, implementing the highest standards available for supporting children.
Head of Early Years and Primary PE
Magnus was born in Sweden, where he grew up participating in various competitive sports. His sports teaching career started over 20 years ago with coaching a variety of sports, following that he moved into outdoor ED facilitation and finally into teaching at schools. Magnus has taught in Sweden, Malaysia, Micronesia, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong. His education includes a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Health from Hong Kong University as well as other certifications. Physical activity and an active lifestyle have always played a large part in his life and he enjoys participating in various sports.
EAL Teacher Grade 2 & Grade 3
After completing his degree in Drama and Literature, Matt worked in fields as diverse as finance and theatre. His teaching career began in London, where he taught in multi-cultural primary schools. It was here that he gained a wealth of experience in working with EAL learners. Previously, he has taught in an international school in Hong Kong as well as in a top secondary school in Singapore for the past two years. His interests include a range of outdoor pursuits, team sports, theatre and spending time with his wife and two daughters. Matt is committed to inquiry-based learning and is really excited to be working with the wonderful students and members of staff at WISS.
EAL Teacher Grade 4 & Grade 5
Lisa is from Wales and gained a B.Ed Primary (Honours) at the University of Gloucestershire. She began her teaching career in London and has since taught EAL learners in both Primary and Secondary schools in addition to College and University in the UK. Lisa enjoys travel and has previously taught in Japan and the Philippines. On returning to the UK, she worked as an Education Authority School Improvement Advisor for EAL. Missing Asia, she moved with her family to Shanghai in 2011 and was Head of EAL at an international school before joining WISS. Lisa is enthusiastic about teaching EAL within the PYP curriculum; encouraging and supporting the language acquisition of those children new to English within the WISS community.
PE/Swimming Teacher Grade 1 – Grade 5
After graduating from De Montfort University in 2007, Vicki started working as a freelance dance practitioner working for numerous companies in both educational and community settings. In 2011, she became a dance coach for a sports coaching company in Shanghai. She became a Learning Support Assistant and EAL Teacher at a large, private school in Shanghai. It was through her teaching practices that her passion for Primary PE became apparent.
Head of EAL / EAL Teacher Grade 1
Mr. Pritchard received his Bachelor of Education (Honours) at Westhill College, Birmingham University. After three years of primary school teaching in the UK, Nigel headed overseas. During the six years previous to his tenure at WISS, he worked at two other international schools in China. Receiving ongoing PYP training, Nigel is excited by this opportunity to teach in the programme for which he feels a great affinity as a teacher.
PE /Swimming Teacher Grade 1 – Grade 5
Ms Lu is a former Olympic swimmer and has represented China at many international games around the world, including taking the silver medal at the Swimming World Cup. Ms Lu has been an educator, swimming teacher, and pool manager for 12 years and wants to use her expertise to help the young people at WISS to unlock their sporting potential.
Music Teacher Kindergarten – Grade 2
Adi is an experienced Rhythm and Movement specialist and has been teaching music to young scholars since 2006. She started her musical career with 3 years of professional studies at the Rimon school of Jazz and contemporary music majoring in Vocals, following that with a BA (Hons) in musicology and teacher certification studies in Israel. Adi is finalizing her theses on Beethoven’s piano sonatas. She likes singing, swimming and Indian food. Her favorite phrase is “Music is what feelings sound like.
Music Teacher Grade 3 – Grade 5
Mr. Elguea is from Spain and has been passionate about music all his life. He obtained his music teaching degree in his hometown, later moving to Chicago where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s in orchestral studies at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. He has played in the Chicago College of Performing Arts Symphonic Orchestra and the Lira Symphonic Orchestra, touring the US and Japan. Since 2006 he has been teaching music in Spain and performing in Spain, France and Italy. In 2010 he joined the British School of Navarra as a primary music teacher, and this has given him a remarkable perspective on international education.
Before gaining her Master’s Degree in Comparative Education at Shanghai Normal University in 2011, Selina was an experienced teacher and trainer teaching English as a Second Language in Kindergartens. After graduating from SNU, Selina worked for an investment company whose focus is to develop Kindergartens. Based on her passion for Early Childhood Education, she was a key part of setting up six new Kindergartens in Shanghai, Kunshan, Datong, Linyi, Zhuji and Yangquan. Selina believes that every child is unique and talented, each needing an appropriate environment in order to learn, explore and develop. Selina is excited to create learning opportunities at WISS for the students and is delighted to be part of the harmonious family at WISS.
Visual Arts Art Teacher Early Years – Grade 2
Cheilaugh Garvey is the Early Years Art Teacher at WISS. She grew up in Japan, Germany and Italy as well as in several states. She graduated from Boston University in Massachusetts with a B.F.A. in Design and Photography and an M.A. in Arts Education from Columbia University in New York City. She has spent most of her teaching career in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, but most recently in Tunisia. Having an eclectic past, she finds that teaching art is the best way to utilize all her skills and passions; from helping children to be self-sufficient, creative and cultivate their inner artist to facilitating exploration and discovery through art while watching her students take creative risks. Her very creative and talented son Cooper is also part of the WISS family.
Visual Arts Teacher Grade 3 – Grade 5
Isha Joshi is from India and was born and brought up in Delhi, India’s capital. She finished a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College of Art at the University of Delhi. She also completed a course in textile designing for fashion. Isha has been teaching in IB PYP for 9 years and loves working with clay, experimenting with a variety of mediums with her students in the art room but what really thrills her is creating something out of pure waste! She loves illustrating her life experiences and the sights and sounds which surround her in the form of digital art. She believes that her students are a big source of inspiration for her work. Collaborating with other team members to enrich the curriculum is her forte.
Learning Support Teacher
Amy Gatesman-Quigley was born in the United States and comes from the Philadelphia Area. She has been living and teaching in Shanghai since 2007. Ms. Quigley received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Special Education from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 1993. Although specializing in working with children that have specific learning challenges, she also comes qualified to work with children that need behavioral/emotional support at both the primary and secondary level. She is also qualified and experienced to support students who are Exceptional/Gifted and Multi-handicapped. She loves being part of the WISS community of educators and is joined at WISS by her three adorable children.
Dr. Salome Turnberger
Learning Support Teacher
Salome Turnberger arrived from Fairfax County, Virginia, USA. She earned a Doctor of Arts from George Mason University, Master of Arts from Marymount University, and is also a member of Who’s Who Among American Professionals. Her areas of expertise include: supporting students with specific learning needs, differentiation, and learning styles. Her international experiences include working with children, within the IB program, in India and the United Arab Emirates. Dr. Salome is very happy with the friendly, professional, and family oriented community at WISS. Salome is a very active person and enjoys experiencing all the activities available and exploring the culture of Shanghai and China.
