Students Tackle Global Issues | PYP Exhibition

Our cohort of Grade 5 students recently faced one of the biggest challenges in the life of an IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) student - The Primary Years Programme Exhibition (PYPX). This exhibition represents a significant event, synthesizing the essential elements of the programme and sharing them with the greater school community.

For students, this extensive research project builds the foundational skills they will need as they progress through their school career to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and beyond. The exhibition showcases the knowledge and skills students gained throughout the programme as they exhibit the extensive inquiry learning process demonstrating their readiness for further education.

As a learning community, the Western International School of Shanghai shares the responsibility to help students achieve their academic goals, such as gaining their high school diploma or receiving those anticipated offer letters from top universities.

Ultimately, we aim to prepare students for life after WISS—for life outside of the classroom and experiences in the real world. The approaches to learning cultivated at WISS include social skills, critical thinking skills, communication skills, research skills, and self-management skills. These skills are relevant far beyond the confines of the IB Diploma or Career-Related Programmes and WISS itself. The time spent at school on these activities is just as crucial as the knowledge of mathematical equations and chemical reactions.

Doing and experiencing are key components of meaningful learning. Indeed, our learning process should go far beyond the frontiers of the classroom. As learners, we can demonstrate a personal commitment to service and act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and to the environment.

November has become Movember at the Western International School of Shanghai. The charity campaign runs throughout November and has become an annual tradition at WISS, with staff members and students doing their bit for the cause every year.

The Movember Foundation was founded in 2003 to allow men to live happier, healthier, and longer lives. Since 2003, it has raised over $6 billion, funding men's research projects and health programs related to physical inactivity, mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

The WISS Education rests on four unyielding pillars of learning: Academics, Sports, Arts, and Community Service.

At the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS), service learning is a unique educational experience that combines classroom instruction with community service. By engaging in meaningful projects and activities that address real-world problems, our students can apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in the classroom to impact their communities positively. Through service learning, students also develop a sense of social responsibility, empathy, and compassion for others and gain valuable leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
