Developing a growth mindset and resilience is an intricate and sensitive process that requires a delicate balance of stability, nurture, and challenge. Throughout our students’ learning experiences, whether face-to-face or online, they are encouraged to develop their approaches to learning (ATLs). The acquisition of these skills, such as communication, thinking, research, and self-management, are fundamental to becoming independent learners.
With a focus on supporting and empowering students to overcome these current challenges, our school enables students to develop and demonstrate resilience, perseverance, and adaptability to succeed in their everyday learning and future lives.
At the Western International School of Shanghai, we strongly believe that every child possesses creativity that must be nurtured. To achieve this, we offer a range of experiences that help our students learn and grow by making real-world connections. We also encourage outdoor exploration because we believe that it offers a lot of benefits to a student's learning journey. Being in an outdoor environment prepares them for various situations where they can be independent, creative, innovative, and risk-takers while stimulating their imagination and exploring nature's mysteries.
Students at WISS are confident when they step outside the classroom to continue their learning outdoors. They are accustomed to an environment with no set rules, where they can climb trees, jump in muddy puddles, get wet, get dirty, or cook in the mud kitchen as part of their learning experience. We value the experiential interactions our students acquire through outdoor learning, knowing that everything they learn can be applied to many aspects of their lives.
Our school combines outdoor learning with classroom time to enhance creativity and make natural connections between environments and learning. Through hands-on, inquiry-based learning, students develop their knowledge of the world, communication, critical thinking, and self-management skills. By participating in outdoor activities, our students exercise, learn, and have fun while enjoying authentic real-life experiences and gaining knowledge about their natural environment.
Apart from the outdoor activities that our students experience throughout the school year, we also celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day, a special day in our school calendar. WISS Outdoor Classroom Day is filled with hands-on activities around the Early Years building, bringing learning to life. Our Early Years learning space is thoughtfully designed to encourage open-ended learning, inviting our students to engage with nature and expand their imagination by discovering new ways to interact with their surroundings. With vast green spaces surrounding the building, our students have access to a magical bamboo forest, a mud kitchen, a reading cave, a sensory playground, and many other open spaces where they can expand their creativity.
