Celebrating literacy is an important way to recognize the power of reading and writing in improving people’s lives. Celebrations of literacy can take many forms and can happen on a variety of scales. At the Western International School of Shanghai we celebrate literacy every day but once per year we dedicate an entire week focused on literacy. The WISS Book Week is a school-wide celebration consisting of various activities that promote literacy. The week encompasses parent reading sessions, Book Swap Stations, Door Decoration, Snuggle Up and Read Day, and Character Dress-Up Parade, all inspired by favorite authors and books.
At WISS, we encourage our students to get carried away by the amazing stories that await them on each page. We nurture a love for reading that will stay with our students for a lifetime.
Any moment is a good moment to dive into a beautiful literary adventure and WISS was abuzz with reading in every corner of the campus.
Book Week was an epic week for literacy. Packed with participation from students, teachers, staff, and the WISS community. Here’s what the WISS Community has been up to:
We started the week by decorating all doors of our campus. We challenged our students, teachers, and staff to use their creative skills to decorate the doors of their classrooms and offices. Have a look at the most eye-catching!
The second day was dedicated to celebrating International Mother Language Day. A variety of activities and performances took place across campus to recognize and celebrate the diversity of of our community which speaks over 40 languages.
On that day, we invited parents to read to our Primary Students and Early Years Students. Parents read their favorite stories in their mother language, exposing students to a rich literacy and cultural experience.
On Day Three we kicked-off the WISS Book Swap initiative and Book Fair that offered a variety of good books for all ages. Students, parents, and staff were invited to exchange books, and choose new books, stories and adventures to read and dive into.
A big thank our WISS Community for donating books in support of this initiative!
Snuggle-up and Read Day. Thursday was a comfy day. Students, teachers and staff arrived on campus in their Pajamas to participate in Snuggle-up and Read Day! Everybody was encouraged to find a time and a comfortable sport to read from their favorite book. Check out some of the best pajama outfits we found lounging around!
One of the highlights of WISS Book Week is a visit from literary guest, and this year we had the pleasure to invite WISS students and teachers who are also writers to talk about their books.
The Grand Finale to in incredible week of literacy was our much-anticipated Book Character Parade. It was wonderful to see so many characters stepping out of the books and into our school. The parade included our youngest Early Years student to our Grade 12 Student, Teachers, and parents. What a great way to celebrate literacy and community.
