The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Exhibition

On the last Friday of September you will find our Grade 12 students in professional dress standing next to tables, laptops, and tri-fold presentation boards talking about knowledge problems like “What is the relationship between knowledge and culture?”, or “To what extent is objectivity possible in the production or acquisition of knowledge?”. The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Exhibition is the culmination of a year's worth of work in which students have wrestled with personal ideas about knowledge and the role they play in production and acquisition of said knowledge. Students aren’ just demonstrating their understanding of how TOK manifests itself in everyday life, but they are also satisfying a key assessment milestone towards the acquisition of the IB Diploma.

Sensory Playground at WISS

At the Western International School of Shanghai, the International Baccalaureate is in our DNA. WISS is the only school in China that offers all four IB programmes. The WISS education prepares students intellectually and socially to become lifelong learners and global citizens. Although the number of IB graduates continues to grow every day, the maximum score is achieved by less than 0.5% of students worldwide. WISS is proud to contribute to this global achievement that reflects our vision of providing excellence in international education.

Obtaining 45 points in the IB Diploma is an achievement that requires much more than purely academic excellence. Other qualities and skills contribute to the academic success of students. Time management, effective self-expression, the ability to elaborate on theories and hypotheses, and being a critical thinker all support student accomplishment.

Sensory Playground at WISS

WISS started the new school year as a community with our first parent welcome event. For School leadership, it is always a pleasure to meet and gather with our families to create opportunities to form a cohesive school-parent relationship and to make our families, new and returning, feel at home and part of the WISS Community.

WISS Coffee Mornings are always a great opportunity to catch up, make new friends and connect with members of the parent community over freshly brewed coffee and delectable canapés.This event was an excellent opportunity for the parent community to connect and marked the first meet and greet with WISS's new Head of School, Mr. David Edwards.

Our dedicated Parent Ambassadors did an excellent job supporting the event. They welcomed all arriving families and helped create a warm and vibrant atmosphere.

Sensory Playground at WISS

School days are now much more exciting for Little Tigers at the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS), thanks to the new playground area.

If there is something that identifies the WISS way of teaching is its particularity. WISS offers valuable and innovative education, encouraging students to thrive, think, deal with challenges, and resolve problems. Following this holistic approach to teaching, our efforts have been focused on creating innovative learning spaces where our students acquire knowledge through an inquiry-based approach and engaging play-based learning.

Learning at WISS occurs indoors and outdoors, enabling our students to learn through what they do, what they encounter, and discover. At WISS, students develop a natural curiosity to learn and to engage with learning through play. The new play area provides a new place to explore imagination and creativity and a space where students become effective thinkers, leaders, and collaborators. Students are invited to use their initiative, explore possibilities, and challenge themselves while they connect with learning.

WISS Students are challenged to think globally

Grade 5 leaves its mark on WISS students. Firstly, it is the last year of Primary, and it represents the leap towards the Middle Years Programme. It marks a before and an after in the Primary stage as students face the Primary Years Program Exhibition (PYPX), the first major public exhibition of their long and extensive inquiry learning process.

PYPX is not another short-term project, a presentation on a topic, or just a usual event. This is one of the biggest challenges for Primary students. It is an extensive research project that builds the foundational skills they will need as they enter the MYP and beyond.

PYPX is the last step of hundreds of little steps leading them to this culminating milestone event, marking the end of their time as a PYP student. It is the peak of a whole year of research, analysis, meetings, designs, and implementation of an innovative project which can be used today to solve real, existing problems.
