WISS Students are challenged to think globally

Grade 5 leaves its mark on WISS students. Firstly, it is the last year of Primary, and it represents the leap towards the Middle Years Programme. It marks a before and an after in the Primary stage as students face the Primary Years Program Exhibition (PYPX), the first major public exhibition of their long and extensive inquiry learning process.

PYPX is not another short-term project, a presentation on a topic, or just a usual event. This is one of the biggest challenges for Primary students. It is an extensive research project that builds the foundational skills they will need as they enter the MYP and beyond.

PYPX is the last step of hundreds of little steps leading them to this culminating milestone event, marking the end of their time as a PYP student. It is the peak of a whole year of research, analysis, meetings, designs, and implementation of an innovative project which can be used today to solve real, existing problems.

The WISS Language Program recognizes the importance of learning foreign languages, engaging with other cultures, and developing proficiency in one or more languages.

At WISS, we value language learning. With a community of over 50 nationalities speaking 40 languages, we endeavor to support students not only in their learning of new languages but also in maintaining their mother tongues. The WISS Language Program recognizes the importance of learning foreign languages, engaging with other cultures, and developing proficiency in one or more languages.

Part of the WISS Education and true to the nature of an IB World School, languages play an essential role in the education of our students.   We believe learning languages nurture global-mindedness and are vital in developing excellent communication skills for success in a global society. Languages are critical in formulating an understanding and respect for different cultures and help shape identity.

At WISS, we know that the earlier language study commences, the more significant impact has on a child’s language retention and fluency. In our school, all students are offered the opportunity to study Chinese as an additional or native language. The language program is further enhanced through school assemblies, performances, presentations, and field trips around Shanghai. Chinese is the only language other than English offered at every level from Nursery through to G12.

The WISS Education rests on four unyielding pillars of learning: Academics, Sports, Arts, and Community Service.

At the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS), service learning is a unique educational experience that combines classroom instruction with community service. By engaging in meaningful projects and activities that address real-world problems, our students can apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in the classroom to impact their communities positively. Through service learning, students also develop a sense of social responsibility, empathy, and compassion for others and gain valuable leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.

We speak to Uxue Gantxegi , a WISS Alumni who graduated in 2021 to study philosophy and linguistics at the University of  Utrecht in Netherlands. “One aspect that formed part of my development was the small, tight-knit community that WISS had. Being part of a caring community really influenced my behavior towards others and contributed to my realization that we are all part of a global community. WISS also offered me many valuable literacy skills, such as essay writing, that have been very useful in my time at university. “

At WISS, we believe that problem–based learning inspires students to become true IB learners. This approach to teaching and learning supports the development of the IB Learner Profile attributes, which encourage students to consider global challenges through inquiry, action, and reflection.

As part of their Unit of Inquiry – “Where We Are in Place and Time,” Grade 4 students are challenged to apply their problem-solving and critical thinking skills to reflect on a real-world problem: Migration.

Through a WISS IB education, students develop essential 21st-Century skills. In an increasingly interconnected and complex world, these skills, which include problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, creative thinking, and perseverance, are elements for future success. Recently, Primary students from Grade 4 have demonstrated that they are a well-prepared future generation of young problem-solvers.
