"Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion."   Martha Graham

At the Western International School of Shanghai, we offer a robust Arts Programme through which we offer students the opportunity to embrace performing arts, music, art, design, and dance through our balanced curriculum and After School Activity Programmes.

The annual Western International School of Shanghai Dance Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the school year. The DanceFest is dedicated to exploring all forms of dance, incorporating skills development like body language, non-verbal communication, teamwork, and collaboration. But most of all, it's FUN!

The WISS Education is built on four pillars of learning: Academics, Sports,Arts, and Community Service. As part of the curriculum, WISS celebrates an appreciation of the arts by sharing students’ work and showcasing their skills and talents through opportunities for performances, gallery exhibitions, and community events. Most recently, the Secondary School Winter Concert has been the perfect event to showcase our student’s passion for music.

It is well documented that children's intellectual and emotional development is enhanced through the study of arts. At the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS), Arts are essential in our multifaceted, well-rounded education.

The WISS curriculum is built on four pillars: Academics, Sports, Arts, and Community Service. As a school, we believe that all students have the potential to develop creatively. We provide them with opportunities to function as artists and learners of the arts. Learning about and through arts is fundamental to the development of the whole child, promoting the ability to think creatively and critically. Creative thinking encourages students to explore the unfamiliar and experiment innovatively to develop their artistic intentions, processes, and work.

What springs to mind when you think about your hometown? Some view their hometown as a place of origin, or an eventual destination, while others consider it to be an experience on the journey that is life.As an international school that plays host to students from all corners of the globe, the notion of a hometown is somewhat foreign.

In international school communities, many families tend to be more nomadic and often travel to and live in different countries and cities, immersed in the local culture. These families don’t tend to develop an overly emotional attachment to their current “home.”Although a highly enriching experience for families.

Gavin and Jack are two WISS students from Grade 8 who have a shared passion – they shape their thoughts by creating beautiful words. When we asked them to participate in the recent writing competition run by Shanghai Family, they were happy to contribute and apply their skills. Like true WISSians, they explore every opportunity to develop their passions in learning and in life.

The magic of Dr. Seuss was brought to life by our 4th and 5th graders in “Seussical”- a poignant musical blending our favorite Seuss characters in a story about the imagination, friendship, and possibilities. The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, The Who’s of Whoville, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie LaBird, Sour Kangaroo and an entire jungle of animals and sea of fish transported us to another world to share the message that “a person is a person, no matter how small.” These beloved characters exhibited many IB Learner Profile attributes like being principled, caring, and open-minded inquirers and risk-takers; while also demonstrating WISS’sdiversity driven and compassionate spirit. Perhaps the Cat in the Hat is a Tiger?
