At the recent University Fair hosted by WISS, 15 prestigious universities from around the world came together to showcase their campuses and highlight their excellent education opportunities. This fair was designed specifically for secondary students and parents of grades 9-12 who are seeking information about higher education opportunities. Throughout the event, attendees had the chance to engage directly with university representatives and faculty members who offered guidance on admissions, scholarships, and other academic opportunities.
A vital element of the Career-related Programme is the study of Personal and Professional Skills. Students acquire skills that support learning, life, and work over the two-year course, covering five main subjects: Applied Ethics, Intercultural Understanding, Personal Development, Effective Communication, and Thinking Processes.
Applied Ethics is the application of ethics to real-world problems and attempts to answer the question of how people should act in specific situations. While studying Applied Ethics as part of the Personal and Professional Skills Programme, students will analyze, discuss and debate ethical dilemmas in general life, progressing to dilemmas more specific to the workplace and their career-related studies.
The IB Career-related Programme has four elements: Language Development, Service Learning, Personal and Professional Skills, and the Reflective Project. These elements are known as the CP Core.
The Reflective Project is a 3,000-word assignment focusing on an ethical dilemma within the student’s career-related study. As our Grade 12 students finalize these projects, our Grade 11 students prepare for them by learning about ethics in their Personal and Professional Skills class.
It is an incredibly exciting time to be involved in the world of education. At no other point in the modern history of teaching and learning, have so many factors come together to provide such a large-scale opportunity to adjust, develop and significantly strengthen what occurs in schools.
There can be no understatement on the impact of the pandemic on personal well-being, as well as the larger socio-economic implications caused from the past three years. Yet within this, and remaining eternally optimistic, we are at a point in time when not only have questions arisen about education, but more importantly, action has been taken.
Over these past years, the manner in which we measure and represent student progress and achievement has shifted. In our specific education world, the International Baccalaureate swiftly adjusted the measure for IB Diploma students, changing the entire examination process. National governments and other certifying bodies equally followed suit. As some normality returns in the world, the question now arises loudly “Do we return to the past or should we push ahead for the future?”
The Western International School of Shanghai offers a robust academic programme as part of the school curriculum. The WISS exclusive university partnerships are among the range of distinguishing programs offered to students. One such partnership is with the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in the United States. SCAD forms part of the WISS IB Career-Related Programme (IBCP) and offers students a plethora of university-level courses based on foundation-level Art and Design.
The selection of courses on offer affords WISS students a flexible pathway to explore their passions in the field and possible career pathways, which include:
Architect, Interior Designer, Game & Software Designer, Photographer, Performing Artist, Advertising & Branding Executive, Artist, Author/Playwright, Digital Design Consultant, Sketch Artist, Sound Designer, Visual Effects Specialist, Industrial Design, Animation, and Sustainability Design.
At the Western International School of Shanghai, the International Baccalaureate is in our DNA. WISS is the only school in China that offers all four IB programmes. The WISS education prepares students intellectually and socially to become lifelong learners and global citizens. Although the number of IB graduates continues to grow every day, the maximum score is achieved by less than 0.5% of students worldwide. WISS is proud to contribute to this global achievement that reflects our vision of providing excellence in international education.
Obtaining 45 points in the IB Diploma is an achievement that requires much more than purely academic excellence. Other qualities and skills contribute to the academic success of students. Time management, effective self-expression, the ability to elaborate on theories and hypotheses, and being a critical thinker all support student accomplishment.
The continued tremendous success of our graduates demonstrates that a Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) Education is an investment in a child’s future.
We equip our students with the necessary skills, experience, exposure to academic challenges, and guidance which offer them a significant advantage when applying to universities and contribute to student success in the competitive 21st Century workplace.
We are tremendously proud of our Graduate Class of 2022. These students have remained dedicated and focused through the many challenges they had to faced and overcome over the past two years.
The WISS Graduating Class of 2022 have received offers from top-ranked universities in the United States, Asia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and across Europe.
