As a learning community, the Western International School of Shanghai shares the responsibility to help students achieve their academic goals, such as gaining their high school diploma or receiving those anticipated offer letters from top universities.

Ultimately, we aim to prepare students for life after WISS—for life outside of the classroom and experiences in the real world. The approaches to learning cultivated at WISS include social skills, critical thinking skills, communication skills, research skills, and self-management skills.These skills are relevant far beyond the confines of the IB Diploma or Career-Related Programmes and WISS itself. The time spent at school on these activities is just as crucial as the knowledge of mathematical equations and chemical reactions.

Enrichment Week at WISS offers nutrition, financial literacy, and kitchen safety sessions. Students also have the opportunity to engage in activities designed for well-being, like sports, yoga, and board games. Although Enrichment Week focuses on fostering social and emotional growth, students are offered opportunities to attend university prep workshops that incorporate personal statement writing and elements designed to support the development of academic research abilities. Students receive insights from university representatives about the college application process and the qualities that selection committees look for in qualified applicants. This knowledge is useful for transitioning to higher education. There are also opportunities for students to attend revision sessions focused on final IB exam performance.

Combining serious conversations, skills building, and physical activities with a healthy measure of fun creates memorable experiences. It is an exciting time for teachers to share their interests and knowledge in fields outside of the classroom and for students to investigate topics beyond the IB curriculum that are unquestionably important for living successful adult lives.
