The holiday season is a time for students to relax and take a break from school, but it's also an opportunity to continue developing their literacy skills through reading. Reading not only improves language proficiency but also fosters imagination, critical thinking, and broadens horizons. Join the Western International School of Shanghai as we explore the importance of students continued engagement with reading and literacy during the holidays, as well as provide some exciting book recommendations to keep them engaged.

The Western International School recently hosted its annual Parent Christmas Luncheon, a delightful event that brought together parents from across our community to celebrate the spirit of the holiday season.

The luncheon at Kathleen’s Waitan on The Bund, was not only a festive celebration, but also an opportunity for parents to showcase their fashionable attire, adding to the already enchanting ambiance of twinkling lights, shimmering ornaments, and elegant table settings. The careful attention to detail in the decorations created a magical atmosphere, setting the stage for a truly memorable experience.

We have recently celebrated Book Week at WISS. As every year, our students have been able to see and acquire new books to read at home. But, what if my son doesn't like to read… what can I do?

Getting a child to read on their own initiative is one of the most difficult challenges that adult readers have. Electronic devices (mobile phones, tablets, computers) are currently helping to make reading an increasingly difficult activity.

Reading, and especially reading comprehension, is a basic tool for the acquisition of increasingly complex learning. Reading comprehensively facilitates the organization of thought, favors a better understanding of reality and contributes to the management of emotions and behavior.

Poetry can be seen as a form of self-expression – a way for people to share their thoughts, feelings, and emotions creatively and uniquely. For many, poetry can be a therapeutic outlet, providing a space to explore personal thoughts and experiences. It can also be a way to connect with others, sharing stories and perspectives in a way that can create understanding and connection.

Poetry can take many forms, from traditional rhyming verse to free-form or experimental pieces. There are no rules or boundaries, which can make writing a very freeing and liberating form. Whether you're looking to express yourself creatively, explore your emotions, or connect with others, poetry can be a powerful tool.
